Module description

Practice based learning is an essential component of preparation for entry to the healthcare professions. The role of the mentor is central to inculcating the values and aptitudes necessary to deliver skilled, compassionate and competent care (Compassion in Practice, 2012, Francis, 2013). Recognition of the importance of mentorship to the calibre and capability of the future healthcare workforce requires that aspirant mentors are appropriately prepared for their role (Willis, 2012). This module is designed to facilitate healthcare professionals to develop, explore and apply the principles of teaching, learning and assessing in practice settings. Student mentor learning will be facilitated within the university, using a blended approach to the delivery of the module will include both VLE and taught sessions using and supported within their workplace by a registered health care professional who is currently live on the mentor register. Students will be expected to complete and submit a practice document, with supporting evidence, from the mentor which should reflect the application of theoretical concepts to the practice setting. . Prerequisites: Registration with a professional body for at least one year (NMC, 2008). All other Registered Health Care professionals must have a minimum of six months post qualification experience.
