Module description

This module is primarily designed to support the newly qualified social worker's transition from qualification and initial registration to becoming a capable practitioner through an assessed and supported year in employment. As the module can also accommodate the initial professional development needs of practitioners from other fields it is both interdisciplinary (addressing the learning needs of practitioners in child and adult care) and interprofessional in nature. The module will support the individual in their development as a critically reflective practitioner equipped to deal with complex cases in order to promote best practice in safeguarding, facilitation, assessment and interventions with service users and their families. The module will examine how practitioners can develop their professional capabilities (eg: of Professionalism, Values and Ethics, Diversity, Justice, Knowledge, Judgement, Critical Reflection and Analysis, Contexts and organisations, Professional leadership) and sustain and extend their level of capability within the competing and changing demands of the practice arena. This type and level of engagement with the professional capability domains is critical as practitioners are now increasingly charged with upholding the public reputation of their profession. Students will be supported in their learning through a series of university-based workshops and accompanying resources (eg; VLE materials, service user involvement and the contributions of experienced practitioners) together with the employer's supervision framework. The workshops will include a mix of guest speakers, learning activities, reflection and action-learning. This module is assessed through a critical reflective account of the student's professional development as a newly qualified practitioner.
